Thought i would send another message. I was looking at all the pics of your family. Your boys are adorable and Louise sounds like an incredible woman. I was also sad to hear from my mother about your father. How horrible for you all. I hope that the waters ahead are calmer for you all. Best wishes, Georgina

My wonderful children bought me your book for Christmas 2008. The best read in 25 years. You are gifted to have literary and nautical skills. I've always told my wife and children being bloody minded is not always a bad thing.
Hope you sell the boat to someone who uses it.

I have just been reading a Stonyhurst Newsletter in which Adrian's trip was detailed. I am so very glad that a freak wave got A back on board when all seemed lost.
Really a inspirational thing to do.
Very best wishes,

I am truly honoured to know you. You have made real your dream something the rest of us merely aspire to and work at. I hope one day the boys will really appreciate the magnitude of your achievement and the dedication and committment shown by both you and Louise . You left a man and returned a hero . How many of us can say that about our fathers ? Congratulations
Wishing you every success and more with your book.
Love you all

Good to know Adrian that you are safely back in the UK.
Am looking forward to your book (2008). In the meantime I downloaded the four Broadly Boats News Specials from editor Ian Johnstone-Bryden I'm reading number three at the moment and am fascinated as he gives us background news and many details up to now unknown to me. Thank you Ian for these free downloads !! Nice "meeting you" on page 15.
Best regards to all of you and happy days.
Till 2008. B.

Well done adrian, good stories as ever! I had a ukranian captain and russian crew on my container vessel across the atlantic, similar silence/refuelling at meals!
Any chance of a reflection on the current political exploitation of the arctic region? The russian sub placing a titanium flag under the north pole seems to be part of the sudden rush for underwater land. "In fact, 45 countries with coastlines qualify for potential "extended underwater territory" rights under the new UN Law of the Sea Convention." - says the guardian article. http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2007/sep/22/oilandpetrol
http://www.wtopnews.com/?nid=383&sid=1254547 is the link to another article
I'm out here in Argentina, and the Brits aren't popular for suggesting they expand their territory around the Falklands. It even includes funny little islands like Rockall (where!?)
Good luck and think of the salmon, there are bags of them where you are now!

Adrian, I am glad to see you safe on board the ship that can get you through. Despite the reports of ice easing it would be enough to stop you at silly 200 mtr. ice bearier with no way around. I commend you for the wise decision. It looks like your guestbook becomes the forum of North, but where else variety of people can share their observations about NE/NW passages.
I checked BBC news as per Imogen mail and found very good connection to Peter Semotiuk who was part of american Belvedere crew in 1988 when David Cowper of Newcastle was going with his Mabel E. Holland eastbound and Vagabond II of Capt. W. Jacobson. Any one knows of fate of this Dutch Yacht that turned around back from Dikson ?

The Northeast Passage through the Russian Arctic has also seen its ice cover shrink and it currently "remains only partially blocked," Esa says "

Congratulations must go to Roger Swanson, a 76-year old pig farmer turned yachtsman from Minesota who completed the North West Passage single handedly in just 45 days last week. Speaking to journalists in the Wall Street Journal he reports it was smooth sailing, with next to no ice, just very cold. As a keen sailor myself, and having followed this blog for many weeks, I can now understand what has been puzzling me for so long - why aren't we reading about Adrian Flanagan and the Alpha Global Expedition in the media. Perhaps it is because he does not sail (or research the facts he intends us to believe) as well as he writes.
If anyone else is interested in the five yacht successful NWP crossings that have been made in the last couple of weeks, the BBC has an excellent feature on their website called Northwest Passage: Plain Sailing, and there are some excellent articles in the Wall Street Journal.

Adrian,
I hope you will make good hop onto this timber cargo ship to get to Dickson. I have been following you since last year while assisting two yachts westbound to pass NWP in 2006 in single season. s/y "Stary" just missed you in Nome while s/y "Nekton" followed to Dutch Harbour. Dave Cowper was very concerned about your problems about fornight ago and we are glad to see you in Tiksi. Can I get the name of this Dutch yacht that is stuck in Tiksi and may be the contact with it's crew? if you can find out.
Cheers,
Victor

Adrian Flanagan is one of these characters whom the British should talk about more. What people like him do is demonstrate what ordinary people can do if they "just do it".
Ellen McArthur is a great sailor who also demonstrates these qualities but her sailing is way beyond realistic goals for most folks. She is talented and sponsered to the point where most people see it as just another business, which has minimum impact on them.
Guys like Adrain though, who's wifes are part of the team, can realy inspire. Normal folks want real but ordinary inspirational people which make them feal that the extraodinary can be achieved.
I am a Yachtmaster Instructor, who works in the oil and gas industry in near artic waters of Russia. I have witnessed state of the art modern ice breakers struggling and failing in conditions which are only 4 months away. As the Equinox approaches, the turmoil in the weather only gets worse. When it arrives its takes no quarter, no lee way, its over in an instant.
Good luck Adrian - but dont push it and try your luck with a last chance dash - many people have tried and some like Shakelton beat the weather, the vast majority didnt.
Great stuff - but I want to hear you about your success - not failure.
As for Global warming - its an opertunity, our planet keeps rotating anyway.

You will then be able to look back on all the great memories, the hard times and dangers will all be worth the effort in achieving the first solo vertical circumnavigation of the globe. l wish you luck and fair winds for the remainder of your trip, looking forward to reading your book. Adrian, I have been following your progress since this circumnavigation was brought to my attention on the College website. A number of emotions have come over me - firstly concern, for your welfare and safety. Secondly, pride at your marvellous tenacity and sense of adventure and finally a tinge of jealousy too. You are doing what all young boys dream about and I think thats absolutely fantastic! I wish you every success on this, the homeward run.
Upon further reflection of your exploits John Masefields' "Sea Fever", sprang to mind.
"I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by;
And the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the white sails shaking,
And a grey mist on the sea's face, and a grey dawn breaking.
I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;
And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.
I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,
To the gulls way and the whale's way where the wind's like a whetted knife;
And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow rover,
And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick's over.
After reading this, to me anyway, it makes what you are doing so much easier to undertand! Best of luck old boy! Look forward to hearing your stories on your safe and successful return!

I came across your expidition by accident and am surprised that I have never heard about it since I am about 100 miles NW of Nome in an Eskimo village on the Bering Sea. It will be great to see your boat pass by. I have been up here for 9 years and have heard lots of stories about the waters in the area plus seen what the summer ocean can do to boats and people. I wish you the best.

I cannot even begin to imagine doing what you are about to attempt but your couraage is such a tremendous example to we lesser mortals who take the easy road, and stay at home by the fire(Summer or Winter these days it seems in dear old

I wish I could write something profound for you Adrian. So I guess it comes down to this....
“Enjoy a cheeky wee smoke of B&H at sunrise, think of your friends and remember to show no fear especially in fear itself. Aye, do just that and return safely to your loved ones”.
You now clutch an accolade for inspiring others such as Chichester gives to you. Watching Connor sail solo for the first time at 10 years old occurred under an English wintry sky in fair wind and rising moon. That was the proudest sight I’ve ever witnessed. He came ashore and asked “If he could ever do what the sailing man does”. Such moments can’t be measured appropriately. I remain grateful that we had a chance to meet you.
See you both in New Zealand one day.
“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover”. (Mark Twain, Tom Sawyer)

Hi Adrain
As always all of us at Kempsails will be thinking of you. As your yoyage moves into the next stage I am sure you are a both a little
nervous and anxious to get going again but I think it is important to take a look back, you have achived a great many personal goals and some very public milestones so it is important to set sail with the confidance of many thousands of sea miles behind you.

Adrian, The wind that left your sails late last summer returned to my lungs when I felt I could also stop holding my breath for you! Counting on your safe and quick return so I can read your book (which I preordered last year). If the journey ever slows let us know about this year's music play list. Best of Luck! Cheers - Scott (Yahoo Groups Eva Cassidy discusison group)

Hi Adrian, I've seen about your attempt to complete the voyage . . . great stuff I hope it all goes well and wish you the very best of luck with it! I hope you can complete it this time (with no problems) and hope you also manage to raise lots for CHOX - you are a great determination and an inspiration for doing this epic and amazing feat!
Sorry I haven't been in touch for ages, I'm just about to finish my A-levels now in the Sixth Form at St Birinus, and my last exam this week . . . so I will follow your voyage again now! I'm gonna continue my crusade raising £20,000 for CHOX, raised nearly £14,000 - but this message isn't about my efforts, it's about yours - so the very best of luck!!
Kindest,
Andrew.
