Wed, 09 Apr 2008 15:13:23 +0000

Message: Well done adrian, good stories as ever! I had a ukranian captain and russian crew on my container vessel across the atlantic, similar silence/refuelling at meals! Any chance of a reflection on the current political exploitation of the arctic region? The russian sub placing a titanium flag under the north pole seems to be part of the sudden rush for underwater land. "In fact, 45 countries with coastlines qualify for potential "extended underwater territory" rights under the new UN Law of the Sea Convention." - says the guardian article. http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2007/sep/22/oilandpetrol http://www.wtopnews.com/?nid=383&sid=1254547 is the link to another article I'm out here in Argentina, and the Brits aren't popular for suggesting they expand their territory around the Falklands. It even includes funny little islands like Rockall (where!?) Good luck and think of the salmon, there are bags of them where you are now! Francis

Message: Congratulations must go to Roger Swanson, a 76-year old pig farmer turned yachtsman from Minesota who completed the North West Passage single handedly in just 45 days last week. Speaking to journalists in the Wall Street Journal he reports it was smooth sailing, with next to no ice, just very cold. As a keen sailor myself, and having followed this blog for many weeks, I can now understand what has been puzzling me for so long - why aren't we reading about Adrian Flanagan and the Alpha Global Expedition in the media. Perhaps it is because he does not sail (or research the facts he intends us to believe) as well as he writes. If anyone else is interested in the five yacht successful NWP crossings that have been made in the last couple of weeks, the BBC has an excellent feature on their website called Northwest Passage: Plain Sailing, and there are some excellent articles in the Wall Street Journal.

Message: Adrian Flanagan is one of these characters whom the British should talk about more. What people like him do is demonstrate what ordinary people can do if they "just do it". Ellen McArthur is a great sailor who also demonstrates these qualities but her sailing is way beyond realistic goals for most folks. She is talented and sponsered to the point where most people see it as just another business, which has minimum impact on them. Guys like Adrain though, who's wifes are part of the team, can realy inspire. Normal folks want real but ordinary inspirational people which make them feal that the extraodinary can be achieved. I am a Yachtmaster Instructor, who works in the oil and gas industry in near artic waters of Russia. I have witnessed state of the art modern ice breakers struggling and failing in conditions which are only 4 months away. As the Equinox approaches, the turmoil in the weather only gets worse. When it arrives its takes no quarter, no lee way, its over in an instant. Good luck Adrian - but dont push it and try your luck with a last chance dash - many people have tried and some like Shakelton beat the weather, the vast majority didnt. Great stuff - but I want to hear you about your success - not failure. As for Global warming - its an opertunity, our planet keeps rotating anyway.

Message: Adrian, I have been following your progress since this circumnavigation was brought to my attention on the College website. A number of emotions have come over me - firstly concern, for your welfare and safety. Secondly, pride at your marvellous tenacity and sense of adventure and finally a tinge of jealousy too. You are doing what all young boys dream about and I think thats absolutely fantastic! I wish you every success on this, the homeward run. Upon further reflection of your exploits John Masefields' "Sea Fever", sprang to mind. "I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky, And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by; And the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the white sails shaking, And a grey mist on the sea's face, and a grey dawn breaking. I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied; And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying, And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying. I must go down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life, To the gulls way and the whale's way where the wind's like a whetted knife; And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow rover, And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick's over. After reading this, to me anyway, it makes what you are doing so much easier to undertand! Best of luck old boy! Look forward to hearing your stories on your safe and successful return! Message: I wish I could write something profound for you Adrian. So I guess it comes down to this.... “Enjoy a cheeky wee smoke of B&H at sunrise, think of your friends and remember to show no fear especially in fear itself. Aye, do just that and return safely to your loved ones”. You now clutch an accolade for inspiring others such as Chichester gives to you. Watching Connor sail solo for the first time at 10 years old occurred under an English wintry sky in fair wind and rising moon. That was the proudest sight I’ve ever witnessed. He came ashore and asked “If he could ever do what the sailing man does”. Such moments can’t be measured appropriately. I remain grateful that we had a chance to meet you. See you both in New Zealand one day. “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover”. (Mark Twain, Tom Sawyer)

Message: Hi Adrian, I've seen about your attempt to complete the voyage . . . great stuff I hope it all goes well and wish you the very best of luck with it! I hope you can complete it this time (with no problems) and hope you also manage to raise lots for CHOX - you are a great determination and an inspiration for doing this epic and amazing feat! Sorry I haven't been in touch for ages, I'm just about to finish my A-levels now in the Sixth Form at St Birinus, and my last exam this week . . . so I will follow your voyage again now! I'm gonna continue my crusade raising £20,000 for CHOX, raised nearly £14,000 - but this message isn't about my efforts, it's about yours - so the very best of luck!! Kindest, Andrew.
