In the doldrums in more ways than one

Adrian writes:
I am now 1,800 nautical miles from Hawaii but still in the belt of unsettled weather that straddles the equator.  Since getting up this morning I have been through 2 gales and sat practically becalmed in boiling sunshine and it isn't even lunchtime yet.

The NE trade winds which will carry me towards Hawaii will settle over the next few days. Because of the unsettled weather conditions, my routine which is very important has completely unravelled leaving me disorientated.  The feeling that I have now been away for a long time is now beginning to knaw and I am going to have to dig deep to keep going.  It will take a Herculean effort not to moor up in Oahu to go in search of the nearest 5 star hotel.

2 nights ago whilst on deck watch I sighted the lights of another ship in the distance.  The was the first sign of human life I had encountered in almost 3 months!
